Orekk Skateboard Designs: A Simple Sketch Skates it's Way to Life

From a simple drawing that was meant to live in a skateboard, I was asked to apply my painting skills to bring it to life.

Using oils, I worked with a palette consisting of purples, greens, blues and yellows, avoiding black and white.
Last minute, arms were requested, as well as having the arms form the year, "2011" at the ends of its arms.
As requested, the tentacles were removed. Varnish was applied, a little too much and the gesso was too textured. But the rough surface did provide a good grasp to the paint.
Orekk was brought into Photoshop, where I used the oil painting colors as a guide to maintain the original palette. Since, "2011" wasn't legible, I decided it was best to remove it.

Octopuses are suited underwater. So I wiggled it's arms, but I made him look.... nervous? Which probably helps or accentuates his very content expression.

I was then asked to create simple designs for the orekk skateboard. From 40 quick digital/hand-drawn sketches, one was chosen.

A picture from a college project was immortalized into the skateboard.

In Photoshop, I messed with the levels, causing the original gum on the desk to be confused with paint on a palette.

Cropping the image to fit the format of a skateboard transformed it into something a little unrecognizable.

Simply, text and image were added.

Zoo animals silhouettes were requested for the final ready design.

Designs were distributed into four different designs.
